What Makes an AI Coaching Tool Reliable
Three conditions need to be met:
Fidelity
The AI's outputs match the coach's actual method, not a generic approximation.
Deferral
The AI hands off anything outside its training to the human coach rather than guessing.
Transparency
The client knows they're interacting with an AI, and the coach has full visibility into every conversation.
What the Evidence Says
A 2022 study published in PLOS One evaluated AI-generated coaching responses and found that when the AI was grounded in a specific expert's methodology, participants rated the responses as credible and helpful. Generic AI outputs — not trained on any particular expert — did not earn the same confidence.
The finding is consistent: fidelity matters more than fluency. A tool that sounds polished but contradicts the coach's method is worse than a tool that sounds simpler but stays faithful.
